Shivat HaMinim Seven Species papercut
The Seven Species of the Land of Israel are wheat, barley, grapevines, fig, pomegranate, olive oil and date honey (Deuteronomy 8, 8). They are depicted in the painting at the center, while around it their Hebrew names are highlighted by a golden background. Below that the Hebrew words "Land of milk and honey" (Deuteronomy 6, 3; 11, 9...) are highlighted, as well. A Menorah stands at the bottom of the papercut. For thousands of years the Seven Species played an important role both in the diet of the Jews of Israel as well as in religious observance and traditions. Offerings of fruit brought to the Temple were taken only from the first fruits of the Seven Species. Today, although not as dominant in the diet of modern Israelis, the Seven Species still characterize the local landscape. The Seven Species remain unique and were never successfully hybridized. |
