The Jerusalem Mizrach papercut

The most common type of Jewish papercuts found in the European Diaspora is the Mizrach. The word Mizrach, which means East in Hebrew, was for East-European Jews the direction of Jerusalem. When praying they would face the eastern wall of the synagogue and mark it with a special ornamental wall plaque called a Mizrach.

At the center, a frame of flowers and ornaments holds the Hebrew word Mizrach. To its left is the Tower of David and to the right, a palm tree, both standing behind the wall that surrounds the Old City. At bottom center the Western Wall stands between cypresses and on either side, Jerusalem houses, old and new.
