Nishmat - Every Living Soul

English and Hebrew papercut

Every living soul blesses God.

The Hebrew words read: "The soul of every living being". The English words read: "Every living soul shall bless You, Hashem". This is the opening of a prayer called "Nishmat", which is an important part of Shacharit, the morning service, for Shabbat and Festivals and is also a part of the Passover Hagaddah. Nishmat is mentioned in Tractate Psachim (118a) and was always regarded as a special prayer. The great philosopher and poet, Rabbi Yehuda HaLevi (1075-1141), as well as the great commentator and poet, Rabbi Avraham Ibn Ezra (1089-1167), composed poetic introduction to Nishmat.
